Wike has been advocating for a Rainbow Coalition in Rivers State to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election; however, this initiative faces opposition from APC governors who fear it could undermine Tinubu’s electoral prospects.
Hope Uzodimma, Chairman of the APC’s Progressive Governors’ Forum, indicated during a meeting that the ruling party’s governors maintain a strict commitment to APC candidates, directly contradicting Wike’s alignment with Tinubu while also supporting the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in other races. Wike has clarified that his backing for Tinubu does not equate to endorsing APC candidates in state elections, asserting his freedom to support his preferred candidates.
The PDP, led by Tanimu Turaki, has criticized the APC, suggesting that the ruling party is beholden to the consequences of its internal divisions, which could ultimately harm Tinubu’s re-election campaign. In a recent interview, Wike pointed fingers at certain APC governors, particularly citing Kwara State’s AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and Uzodimma, as obstacles to his political maneuvers in Rivers State.
The APC governors have emphasized that they will not entertain any political arrangements that might weaken the party’s unity or confuse its electoral base. Wike, however, maintains that the Rainbow Coalition is critical for uniting various political figures in support of Tinubu’s administration while allowing the PDP to explore its own electoral strategies.
Reinforcing his stance, Wike suggested that local problems within the APC should not be blamed on his coalition efforts, urging stakeholders to prioritize the presidential election, after which state elections can be deliberated. He has aptly remarked that his support for Tinubu’s re-election is distinct from his engagements within the PDP, which intends to field its candidates for upcoming elections.
