The 51-year-old was initially caught driving a Range Rover at 37mph in a 30mph zone during a late-night incident in Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire, with West Yorkshire Police prosecuting him for this offense. Additionally, a Mercedes registered in his name was recorded speeding at 49mph in a 30mph zone in November of the previous year, which brought further scrutiny from Greater Manchester Police.

Subsequently, Scholes faced legal actions for failing to respond to two police notices requesting confirmation that he was the driver during the incidents. The cases concluded with hearings last week, resulting in Scholes facing a driving ban and financial penalties totaling £1,472, including fines and court costs. It should be noted that the court proceedings were held privately under the Single Justice Procedure, and Scholes did not attend or enter pleas for either charge, leading to convictions in his absence.

According to court documents, Scholes confirmed he was driving the Range Rover during the March incident but could not partake in an out-of-court settlement via a speed awareness course due to already having penalty points on his driving license, classifying him as a “totter,” which mandated an automatic ban. During the second speeding incident involving his Mercedes, no response was recorded from Scholes regarding police communications, which led to continued prosecution for failing to reply.

On August 12, at Bradford Magistrates’ Court, Scholes received a six-month ban for the Range Rover speeding offense, alongside a £220 fine and additional costs. The next day, at Manchester Magistrates’ Court, he was handed another £660 fine, six penalty points, and further costs and victim surcharges, totaling £1,472. Scholes, who has a storied football career with 499 appearances for Manchester United and 66 caps for England, has won multiple prestigious titles including 11 Premier League titles and two Champions League triumphs.
