Major League Soccer (MLS) is conducting an investigation into possible tampering involving David Beckham’s Inter Miami, specifically related to the acquisition of Brazilian midfielder Casemiro as a free agent. The investigation was made public through a league press release shortly after Inter Miami announced the signing of Casemiro on a contract that extends to the end of the season, with an option to extend until June 2029.

MLS stated, “Major League Soccer is reviewing a tampering allegation against Inter Miami CF. The league is gathering all relevant information and will refrain from further comment until the review is complete.” Following a settlement between Inter Miami and LA Galaxy concerning the Discovery Priority for signing Casemiro, the specific terms of this arrangement will be disclosed after the investigation concludes.

A critical aspect under scrutiny is whether Inter Miami breached the MLS’ “discovery rights” mechanism that allows teams to designate up to six players on a “discovery list,” granting them exclusive negotiation rights with those players. Casemiro was previously included on LA Galaxy’s discovery list, which is significant as his inclusion restricts other MLS clubs from initiating contact during contract negotiations.

According to MLS regulations, if a player is on a club’s discovery list, that club maintains sole rights to negotiate with the player. Other teams may only acquire these rights by offering $50,000 in General Allocation Money. Once this offer is made, the club holding the discovery rights has a limited timeframe—five days generally (or three days during the Secondary Transfer Window)—to either accept the General Allocation Money and relinquish its negotiation rights or to present a valid and reasonable contract offer to the player in question.
