David Sullivan, the 77-year-old co-chair of West Ham, has faced serious allegations following an episode of Panorama, which accused him of exploiting teenage models. He resigned from his position and intends to sue the BBC over what he deems historically serious but unfounded allegations.
The joint investigation by Panorama and The Times highlighted Sullivan’s admission of paying for sex in the 1990s with a girl whom he believed was aged 16 or 17, although it only became illegal to pay for sex with individuals that age in 2003. Seven models have come forward with allegations related to their experiences while seeking work at his publications. One accuser, identified as Florence, detailed a disturbing encounter in which Sullivan allegedly coerced her into a sexual encounter. She expressed horror over the experience, noting her attempts to resist were dismissed by Sullivan.
Sullivan’s defense team countered Florence’s claims, branding them as “implausible.” Panorama alleged that he earned a distasteful nickname for reportedly soliciting sexual favors in exchange for modeling work. Another model, Sacha, recounted a similarly uncomfortable meeting with Sullivan, feeling pressured during a supposed business interview that veered into inappropriate territory.
Sullivan has characterized the allegations as defamatory and completely false, asserting that the media sensationalized the claims. He stressed his commitment to West Ham United while asserting that these allegations do not relate to his three-decade involvement in football. In a statement, he expressed that those who know him well would recognize the discrepancy between the media’s portrayal and his true character.
Moreover, the Metropolitan Police confirmed an investigation into reports of indecent images and sexual exploitation linked to one alleged victim, dating back to the 1980s. Scotland Yard emphasized its seriousness regarding claims against women and girls, encouraging victims to come forward.
