Atletico head into the clash aiming for a record-extending 11th Copa del Rey title, while Sociedad are chasing just their fourth, as both teams arrive in Seville with contrasting form and recent history in the competition.
Managed by Diego Simeone, Atletico booked a spot in the Champions League semi-finals after a 2-1 loss to Barcelona in the second leg still saw them progress 3-2 on aggregate, setting up a showdown with Arsenal.
However, their domestic run has been shaky, suffering five defeats in their last six matches across all competitions, including a 2-1 La Liga loss to Sevilla, leaving them fourth on the table and 22 points behind leaders Barcelona.
Despite the struggles, Atletico have a chance to end the season with silverware, having last won the Copa del Rey in the 2012/13 season when they beat Real Madrid 2-1 in the final.
Their recent record against Sociedad in the competition hasn’t been convincing, with Atletico losing their last two Copa del Rey encounters against the Basque side, including a 2-0 defeat in the 2022 round of 16.
For Lookman, the spotlight remains on his impressive impact since arriving from Atalanta in February 2026, where he has quickly become a key player in cup competitions.
He was instrumental in Atletico’s semi-final victory over Barcelona, delivering a goal and an assist in a dominant 4-0 first-leg win in Madrid. Although Atletico lost the second leg 3-0, they progressed 4-3 on aggregate, with Lookman’s early contributions proving crucial.
The Nigerian forward is now close to becoming only the second Nigerian to lift the Copa del Rey, following Emmanuel Amuneke, who achieved the feat with Barcelona in 1997.
Real Sociedad currently have no Nigerian players in their squad, though striker Sadiq Umar, who moved to Valencia in January, played a role earlier in their campaign.
Sadiq featured in two of Sociedad’s six matches en route to the final and found the net during their run. Based on competition rules, players who contributed in earlier rounds remain eligible for winners’ medals, meaning he will still be recognised if Sociedad emerge champions.
With Atletico pushing for a long-awaited domestic trophy and Sociedad looking to pull off an upset, the final offers Lookman a golden opportunity to cap his rapid rise in Spanish football with a major title.
