Following a suspected gas leak that hospitalized roughly thirty students, the Ogun State Government ordered the closure of Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in Ijebu Ode and initiated an inquiry.

Ola Oresanya, the Commissioner for Environment, stated in a statement released on Thursday that Governor Dapo Abiodun had instructed security agencies to ascertain the incident’s cause, adding that the investigation’s findings would aid in preventing a repetition.

Additionally, the governor mandated that the impacted school be closed right away.

According to the announcement, “Governor Abiodun has also directed the immediate opening of a Situation Room at the General Hospital, Ijebu-Ode, which will offer free treatment to other students and residents of the impacted areas such as Makalewo, Ogbogbo, Molipa, Igbegba, Ikoto, and Oke-Aje market.”
The government said there was no definite security danger associated with the incident, therefore residents of Makalewo, Ogbogbo, Molipa, Igbegba, Ikoto, and Oke-Aje were asked not to panic.
According to Oresanya, gas analyzers were used by Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency authorities to identify the source and type of the material.

According to the statement, Oresanya and other government representatives visited the hospital and school where the victims were being treated.

The majority of the impacted instructors and pupils were in stable condition, the commissioner continued.

At first, some insiders hypothesized that the incident might have been brought on by a nearby gas explosion, while others proposed that a chemical odor in the school laboratory during a practical session was the culprit.

Adeola Borogun, the junior school’s vice principal, denied allegations of an explosion, characterizing the event as the existence of an odd chemical odor on the property.
