Baba-Ahmed stated in a late Friday appearance on Channels TV, which was watched in Abuja, that Nigeria’s basic issues stem from poor leadership selection procedures that have continuously resulted in dishonest and self-serving politicians.
He asserts that corruption, insecurity, and the breakdown of national institutions have all been fostered by electoral fraud. “Electoral fraud is the root cause of insecurity. The type of elections we hold exacerbate corruption. “The fraudulent electoral system we run is guaranteed to destroy our judiciary and our youth,” he said.
The former Senator also blasted the Buhari years. When reminded that some of individuals who worked in the Buhari government are now in the ADC posturing as Nigeria’s future messiahs, he noted the late former president too served in the corruption-soaked General Sani Abacha dictatorship.
He claims that funds linked to the Abacha administration are still being recovered in Nigeria.
Baba-Ahmed claimed that after placing high hopes in the former president, Nigerians were utterly let down. He characterized Buhari’s administration as one of the most dishonest in Nigerian history.
Baba-Ahmed stated that Nigerians were dissatisfied with the former president during the Abacha administration, when Buhari was the chairman of the now-defunct Petroleum Trust Fund PTF.
“Nigerians were utterly let down. Despite having no trade, Buhari was a gentleman. Politics was the first thing to be done after being released from detention. It was a different scenario from the leadership of 1984/85 when Abacha’s archenemy became friends with this person and was given a post during the Abacha era. The truth has vanished. Justice has vanished. There was corruption, corruption, corruption.
“The corruption of that (Abacha) government is well known. The federal government continues to maintain that money was stolen during that time. The 2015 election winners were like wolves. The entire system revolved around party and campaign payments, and corruption began anew.
Baba-Ahmed said that from 2003 to 2015, campaign contributions were the main focus, accusing Buhari’s political environment of putting self-interest ahead of service. He said those former Buhari loyalists who defected to the ADC are misleading the nation and cannot now claim to be able to solve it. Baba-Ahmed stated that he wanted Peter Obi to run for office again in 2027 and remains steadfastly loyal to Obi and the Labour Party. He underlined that those who destroyed Nigeria from 2015 to 2023 cannot now claim to be able to rebuild the nation on a different platform.
