The 25-year-old Mbeumo, who scored 20 goals in 38 league games for the Bees last season, is expected to cost the 20-time Premier League champions an initial £65 million ($87 million).
The France-born forward was also being pursued by Tottenham, who are currently overseen by Thomas Frank, a former Brentford manager, before United’s better bid finalized the deal.
Last Friday, United’s third bid—which was initially valued at £65 million with £6 million in add-ons—was approved.
Mbeumo said in a United statement, “I had to seize the opportunity to sign with the club of my dreams as soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United.”
“The squad whose jersey I wore as a child.”
He continued, “This is a huge club, with an amazing stadium and incredible fans, and we are all really determined to challenge for the biggest trophies.”
In an effort to prevent a recurrence of the disastrous performance from the previous season, United coach Ruben Amorim added two more players this summer.
They finished in 15th place in the first tier, their lowest since 1973–74, and lost to Tottenham in the Europa League final.
Diego Leon, a teenager from Paraguay, and Matheus Cunha, a forward for Wolves, have also relocated to Old Trafford.
The “principal target”
Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund, Amorim’s primary strikers, had a difficult season.
Mbeumo stated, “I always strive to be better than I was yesterday.”
“I am confident that I possess the character and spirit to advance here, competing with top players and learning from Ruben Amorim.
After joining Brentford from French club Troyes in 2019, Mbeumo flourished there for six years, making 242 appearances across all competitions and contributing 70 goals and 51 assists.
According to Phil Giles, director of football at Brentford, “There is always a right time for a player to move on, and for Bryan, that time is now.”
He continued, “We are very happy for him because he has the opportunity to go to one of the biggest clubs in the world.”
Mbeumo played a key role in the Bees’ successful 2024–25 10th-place finish and eventual 2021 promotion to the Premier League.
Jason Wilcox, the director of football for the Red Devils, stated, “We are thrilled to have secured another one of our primary targets ahead of the pre-season tour.”
“As we get ready for an exciting season ahead, Bryan will have the ideal opportunity to work with Ruben and his new teammates thanks to the experience in the US,” he continued.
Marcus Rashford is expected to depart United for Barcelona, and a statement regarding this could be made on Tuesday.
Tyrell Malacia, Antony, Alejandro Garnacho, and Jadon Sancho are still searching for new clubs and are not anticipated to travel to the United States as members of the tour team.
Before playing Arsenal in the first match of the new Premier League season on August 17, United will play West Ham on Sunday to begin their preseason tour of the United States.
