A trailer carrying an excavator collided with the flyover on Thursday, July 17, 2025, according to Minister of Works David Umahi, who led a group of engineers on an inspection tour of the site on Sunday.
According to a statement issued by Mohammed Ahmed, Director of Press and Public Relations for the Ministry, the impact severely damaged two beams and dislocated one. Two people died tragically as a result of the tragedy, while two more suffered significant injuries.
In order to prevent additional damage and guarantee public safety, a portion of the bridge was promptly closed to traffic after an initial evaluation by ministry officials, including Olufunso Adebiyi, the Permanent Secretary, and leading engineers.
“Works Minister David Umahi has inspected the damaged flyover at Keffi caused by an overloaded truck carrying an excavator,” the statement said.
One beam was totally removed by the impact of the accident, while two others were damaged. The assessment was conducted on the spot today, Sunday, July 20, 2025.
“The walkway and parapet were damaged when one beam fell totally. Although clearly damaged, two other beams are still in place. Despite clearing the underpass, the overpass is still closed as a precaution.
In order to replace the collapsed beam, the minister said he had instructed CGC Nigeria Limited, the contractor currently working on federal road projects in the FCT, to start redesigning and molding a new beam right away.
He stated that the restoration procedure should take about 30 days, following which a test for structural soundness will be carried out prior to the beam being reinstalled.
The procedure is anticipated to take about 30 days, and prior to reinstallation, a strength test will be carried out.
“This is an emergency that the federal government is handling. As we await complete releases, we are raising money through an intervention window. After being told, President Bola Tinubu issued an order for repair work to begin right away,” he said.
He also offered his sympathies to the relatives of anyone who might have been hurt or killed in the incident, reassuring them of the government’s resolve to stop it from happening again.
Along with the minister were Yakubu Usman, the Federal Controller of Works in the Federal Capital Territory; Mohammed Ahmed, the Director of Press and Public Relations; and Musa Seidu, the Deputy Director of Design and Bridges.
The Keffi flyover is a vital transportation route that links Nasarawa and other North-Central regions with the Federal Capital Territory. In order to guarantee a quick and secure reconstruction process, the ministry promised to collaborate closely with the contractor and other relevant parties.
