The top citizen of the nation praised the 32-year-old coach in a statement released on Monday through his spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale.

“The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has recognized Ms. Wakama, 32, citing her well-established leadership abilities and unwavering drive to excellence—a statement made by President Tinubu,” Ngelale stated.

“The team, the coach, and everyone who contributed to the historic achievement at the Olympics are commended by the President, who urges them to stay strong and focused on greatness instead of giving up or becoming discouraged,” he continued.

Several basketball fans who were following the post on X (previously Twitter) confirmed the president’s praise for Wakama and her accusations.

“Congratulations, coach Rena Wakama,” wrote Mall Galib. What a well-earned honor to be named the top coach in the Olympic basketball competition in Paris in 2024.

“Yeah! deservedly so. In her first international event, she exceeded everyone’s expectations, considering that she is a very young coach. Ajayi expressed her pride in her.

Well done, Misan Adesanya wrote Excellent work, Coach! It’s wonderful to know that Nigeria’s Olympic endeavor this year included a positive aspect. Team, keep going!

An other X Obinna concurred that the honor was richly merited.

“Our women’s basketball team won many hearts, even if we didn’t take home any medals.

“Coach Rena, congratulations,” wrote Imole Adeyinka. You guys did an amazing job, as did the gals. We are proud of you.

Ololade finds solace in Wakama’s accomplishment, despite Team Nigeria’s lack of success in the medal department.

“This goes beyond just a gold medal. It is more valuable. It is acknowledged worldwide. Congratulations, Nigeria.

Nigeria’s basketball team, D’Tigress, reached the quarterfinals of the Paris Olympics, a feat no other African team has achieved. Despite being tagged underdogs, Nigeria won the hearts of basketball fans with victories over Australia and Canada. Despite ranking as the 12th best team, they gave the US a run for their money, scoring over 73 points in consecutive games for the first time at the Olympics. Their 26 points in the fourth quarter were the most the USA had ever conceded in a competition.
