“The government’s intention to withdraw completely from the electricity sector has raised concerns about the fate of Nigerians following the privatization of electricity companies. Legal expert Falana emphasized that the government must fulfill its commitment to provide stable and uninterrupted electricity before considering any increase in tariffs. He stated that citizens deserve reliable electricity services and criticized the current administration, under President Bola Tinubu, for potentially abandoning its responsibilities towards the electricity sector.

Falana pointed to the close ties between the owners of the electricity companies and government officials, arguing that such relationships should not shield these companies from accountability for inadequate service. He called for the Federal Government to either nationalize the companies or ensure they operate optimally, emphasizing that the current privatization model has not met the needs for efficient electricity supply.

In his address in Ilawe-Ekiti, Falana pressed the Federal Government to focus on reforms that would enhance electricity generation, transmission, and distribution, rather than imposing additional financial burdens on consumers through increased tariffs. He reiterated that a promise made by President Tinubu during his campaign—ensuring uninterrupted electricity—should take precedence in the government’s energy policy decisions.
