According to the Russian state-run news agency TASS, Ukraine has launched its biggest drone offensive on Moscow in two years. The attack destroyed infrastructure, started fires, and dumped debris throughout the capital region.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that around 40 drones headed for the Russian capital were shot down by air defenses overnight and early Thursday. Despite being a significant attack on the capital, the barrage was a part of a broader Ukrainian operation that targeted a large portion of Russia, with air defenses in place in several different areas.
On Thursday, flights at all major airports in Moscow were temporarily halted, as reported by Reuters, citing the Russian aviation agency. This disruption coincided with intensified Ukrainian long-range attacks on Russian energy infrastructure, particularly spotlighting the Moscow Oil Refinery in Kapotnya, which was previously targeted and damaged. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky labeled these attacks as justified responses to Russian strikes against Ukrainian cities. While in Brussels for NATO meetings, Zelensky emphasized the precision and effectiveness of Ukraine’s missile strikes, garnering acknowledgment from international partners.
The Moscow Oil Refinery was notably impacted, as video evidence captured explosions and black smoke emanating from the facility, which also disturbed nearby areas, including an apartment building and a shopping center due to falling debris. In retaliation, Russia executed a significant missile and drone strike on Ukraine, targeting infrastructure crucial for everyday life, such as energy and gas facilities.
Zelensky’s strategy aligns with a broader trend, where Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russian military and energy sites. This operational focus was discussed during the recent G7 summit, where world leaders reaffirmed their support for enhancing Ukraine’s air defense capabilities. Zelensky revealed that U.S. President Donald Trump positively received his suggestions for this support during the summit.
Discussions at NATO, notably among Secretary General Mark Rutte and Zelensky, highlighted Ukraine’s success on the battlefield. Rutte mentioned ongoing collaborations to ensure Ukraine’s military needs, including missile systems. He downplayed the potential impacts of shifting U.S. military resources, asserting that European nations are already compensating effectively.
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth acknowledged NATO’s growing capability to address conventional defense issues in Europe, underscoring the importance of all member states meeting their commitments.
