The Federal Government coordinated the repatriation, with the first group of 268 returnees arriving at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. This Air Peace flight was part of ongoing efforts to assist Nigerians wishing to return home, with over 1,000 individuals having expressed their desire to leave South Africa due to safety fears.

Initially scheduled to depart on Monday, the evacuation flight faced delays but eventually took off on Wednesday after overcoming documentation and processing issues. Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, noted a steady increase in repatriation requests and highlighted the engagement of the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria with South African authorities. This collaboration aimed to facilitate the return of Nigerians, including those with immigration problems, ensuring they could leave without facing detention.

To manage the logistics of repatriation, the Nigerian Mission in South Africa began screening and documenting individuals wishing to return. Although the initial screening was set to conclude over the weekend, it was extended to cater to the rising number of applicants. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs further emphasized its dedication to the welfare and interests of Nigerians abroad, underscoring this commitment as central to Nigeria’s foreign policy.

The arrival of the first returnees signals the commencement of a larger operation designed to assist Nigerians impacted by the unrest, underpinning the Federal Government’s priority in ensuring their safe repatriation.
