The Atlantis community in South Africa is in shock following the birth of an 11-year-old girl, believed to be the result of sexual abuse by her mother’s boyfriend. The child gave birth last week and has since been removed from her home for her safety. The 32-year-old suspect appeared briefly in the Atlantis Magistrate’s Court on May 18, 2026, facing charges of rape after being arrested upon police acquisition of a warrant.
Additionally, the girl’s mother was arrested and charged for failing to report the sexual offense. To protect the identities of the minor and her mother, their names have not been disclosed. The mother is currently in custody and is set to apply for bail on May 19.
Nicholas Gotsell, a Member of Parliament from the Democratic Alliance (DA) and a member of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) focusing on Security and Justice, expressed strong opposition to releasing the alleged rapist. He stated that child rapists must be removed from society and highlighted the DA’s concerns over the Western Cape Provincial Police Commissioner’s approach to addressing gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF). Gotsell criticized the lack of available rape kits for children during his recent oversight visits to the Atlantis police station, further emphasizing the inadequate resources for the South African Police Service’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses (FCS) units.
He detailed that during these visits, there were few adult rape kits and none for children, raising significant questions regarding the capacity and resource allocation of SAPS. The DA has requested statistics on all reported rape and sexual assault cases at these police stations and intends to monitor the investigations. Gotsell remarked that the police are crucial in evidence collection for the successful conviction of rapists and criticized senior SAPS management in the Western Cape for their perceived inaction in light of the President’s commitment to declaring GBV a national state of disaster. The court proceedings for the alleged rapist are postponed to May 26 for a formal bail application.
