In a statement signed on Saturday, Tinubu described the operation as a major breakthrough in the ongoing fight against terrorism and a strong example of security cooperation between Nigeria and the US.
According to the President, Nigerian troops, alongside US military personnel, successfully launched a coordinated strike that targeted the hideout of the terrorist leader. Initial reports revealed that Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki and several of his close associates were eliminated during the attack.
Tinubu praised the operation, saying it represents another important victory in efforts to dismantle terrorist groups threatening peace in the region.
“Nigeria values this partnership with the United States in achieving our shared security goals,” the President stated, while also appreciating US President Donald Trump for his continued support.
He further commended the bravery and professionalism displayed by the security operatives from both nations and expressed optimism for more successful operations against terrorist strongholds across the country.
The operation comes as military offensives intensify in the North-East and Lake Chad region, where insurgent groups linked to the Islamic State have continued attacks on civilians and security formations.
US President Donald Trump had earlier announced the development on Truth Social, describing Al-Manuki as one of the world’s most dangerous terrorists and claiming he served as ISIS’ second-in-command globally.
Trump stated that the militant leader believed he could remain hidden in Africa, unaware that intelligence sources were tracking his movements. He added that Al-Manuki, who had been sanctioned by the US in 2023 for his connection to ISIS, would no longer pose a threat to Africa or support attacks against Americans.
He also noted that the elimination of the terrorist leader would significantly weaken ISIS operations worldwide and thanked the Nigerian government for its cooperation.
The successful mission highlights the growing security alliance between Nigeria and the United States as both nations continue efforts to combat terrorism across the Lake Chad Basin and West Africa.
