Jonathan made the statement on Thursday while meeting with several youth groups at his office in Abuja. The groups visited him to urge him to return to the presidential race ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking during the meeting, the former president explained that becoming Nigeria’s leader requires serious thought and proper consultation.
“You are asking me to contest the next election. Presidency is not a computer game. But I have heard your appeal and I will consult widely before taking any decision,” he said.
Jonathan applauded the youths for showing concern about the future of the country, adding that patriotism remains important in building a better Nigeria.
“If you do not care about the country, you will not even bother to be here,” he added.
The former president also advised Nigerian youths to continue pushing for peace and transparent elections, stressing that credible elections encourage capable people to participate in politics.
“The major thing Nigeria needs is peace. You must continue to support peaceful and credible elections because when elections are not transparent, many good citizens will avoid politics,” Jonathan stated.
He also expressed concern over poor voter turnout in Nigeria, despite the country having millions of registered voters.
“I have monitored elections in more than 14 African countries and even some countries in Southeast Asia, but Nigeria still records one of the lowest voter turnouts during elections,” he said.
Jonathan urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to study the causes of low voter participation and find lasting solutions.
He further challenged young Nigerians to get their voter cards and participate fully in the electoral process.
“If I ask how many of you have voter cards, maybe only half of you do. Yet you want me to contest. You must take part in the electoral process,” he said.
Jonathan also spoke about how Nigerians are treated abroad, blaming years of leadership failures for the negative perception many youths face outside the country.
“The level of disrespect shown to Nigerian youths abroad must stop,” he added.
The former president, however, maintained that he has not taken any decision about the 2027 election and would continue consulting before making his next political move.
