Former Nigeria international Mutiu Adepoju has expressed support for Kelechi Iheanacho returning to the Super Eagles, pointing to the striker’s improved form at Celtic F.C. despite a season affected by injuries, Naija Street Matters reports.

Despite these setbacks, the 29-year-old has recorded six goals and one assist in 18 appearances for the Hoops.

His recent performances have sparked renewed debate about his place in the national team, especially after a standout display in the Scottish Cup semi-final against St Mirren F.C., where he scored twice during extra time.

Adepoju noted that Iheanacho’s ability and experience remain important, adding that his current form could earn him a recall if he maintains his momentum.

“Kelechi has always been a very good player and a reliable goal scorer who has performed well over the years. Unfortunately, in recent times, things haven’t been easy for him,” Adepoju said in an interview with Footy Africa.

He added that the striker’s resurgence at Celtic is encouraging and expressed optimism about his consistency going forward.

“I’m pleased to see him rediscovering his form and performing well at Celtic. I believe he can sustain this level and keep improving,” he said.

Adepoju also highlighted the value of experience in the national team, suggesting that Iheanacho still has what it takes to contribute at the international level.

“Experience is important, and if he continues to perform well and the national team coaches consider him fit and deserving, then he can make a return. I believe he still has the ability to contribute,” he added.

Iheanacho, who has made 58 appearances for Nigeria, built his reputation during his time in England with Manchester City and Leicester City, where he was known for delivering crucial goals.

Although injuries have affected his consistency in recent seasons, his recent form has once again highlighted his quality, with three goals in his last three matches showing his sharpness in attack.

He last played for Nigeria in May during the Unity Cup in 2025. With the team set to defend the title next year and also face Portugal national team and Poland national team in June, his fitness could play a key role as head coach Eric Chelle considers making adjustments to his squad.
