Trump stated in an interview with the Financial Times on Sunday that Washington might use a tactic akin to its one in Venezuela, where he asserted that the US wants to maintain permanent control over the oil industry. Additionally, he claimed that the majority of Iran’s oil shipments transit through Kharg Island, which could be taken.
“To be honest with you, my favorite thing is to take the oil in Iran, but some stupid people back in the US say: ‘Why are you doing that?'” he said. However, they are foolish individuals.
“We might or might not seize Kharg Island. Trump told the FT, “We have a lot of options.” “We would also need to spend some time on Kharg Island.”
“I don’t believe they have a defense. Trump dismissed Iran’s defense capabilities, saying, “We could take it very easily.”
Trump’s remarks coincide with the region’s turmoil driving up oil prices globally, with Brent crude surpassing $116 per barrel due to supply disruptions.
The Pentagon has reportedly already sent thousands of troops to the area, including roughly 3,500 new arrivals, along with other marines and soldiers from the 82nd Airborne Division. According to reports, the forces have received training for operations that entail seizing and controlling critical places.
Trump recognized the dangers of attacking Iran’s oil infrastructure, including the potential for more US casualties and a protracted confrontation, despite the military buildup.
Additionally, Trump hinted that indirect negotiations with Iran were taking place through middlemen, such as Pakistani envoys, and that an agreement to stop the conflict would soon be achieved. He has given Iran until April 6 to reach an agreement or risk additional US strikes on its energy sector.
