The sweet smell of baby powders and lotions may seem harmless, but a Nigerian pediatrician says some scented products could pose health risks for infants.

Dr. Nkechi Nwibo of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in Nnewi is urging parents to avoid perfumed creams, powders and camphor-based products for babies. According to her, infants have delicate, highly absorbent skin that reacts more easily to chemicals than adult skin.

“Perfumed baby products can trigger allergic reactions, contact dermatitis, or even respiratory irritation,” she said.

She also expressed concern about camphor products, which contain naphthalene. In babies with Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency , a genetic condition common in parts of Nigeria; exposure may increase the risk of hemolytic anemia, a disorder that affects red blood cells.

Because babies’ skin barriers are still developing, they are more prone to rashes, eczema and asthma flare-ups when exposed to strong fragrances. Scented powders, when inhaled, can also irritate the airways.

“Camphor is highly toxic,” Dr. Nwibo cautioned, adding that serious complications can occur in young children following exposure.

Her recommendation is simple: choose fragrance-free, hypoallergenic products designed specifically for sensitive skin. When it comes to infant care, she says, keeping things simple is often the safest approach.
