Kingsley Ughelumba, the father of Super Eagles and Fulham defender Calvin Bassey, has publicly appealed for reconciliation with his son after nearly 18 years of separation. Ughelumba expressed his emotional longing for connection, stating he is “dying in silence” and has made several attempts to reconnect since 2020, with little success. He described how marital issues led to the family’s separation, leaving him estranged from his children. Although there was a brief period of communication in 2017 when Ughelumba assisted his children with Nigerian passports, subsequent efforts to reunite have been unsuccessful.
Ughelumba recounted a poignant incident during the COVID pandemic in 2020 when he traveled from London to Leicester, hoping to see Calvin, who was then playing for Leicester City. Despite being welcomed by the club and briefly interacting with his son, the reunion was cut short when Calvin, upon the advice of his mother, chose to distance himself again. Ughelumba’s attempts continued through various other events, including travel to Abidjan for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, but he still could not meet Calvin.
In discussing his family, Ughelumba noted that his initial three sons were born in Italy, while a younger son was born in Ireland, and emphasized his longing to be a part of their lives despite the estrangement caused by their mother’s actions. He stated, “I don’t have any problems with my children—it’s just their mum that made me feel bad,” highlighting the emotional toll of the situation.
Calvin Bassey, now a well-regarded defender with 43 caps for Nigeria, made his debut in 2022 and had significant transfers, including a €23 million move to Ajax and a subsequent €22 million signing with Fulham. Throughout his career, he has chosen to use his mother’s surname professionally, attributing his success to her support, stating he wanted to honor her by choosing her name for his jersey. This ongoing familial estrangement reveals deep emotional complexities intertwined with professional aspirations and personal histories.
