Nigeria’s anti-narcotics agency, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has sounded a major alarm after seizing 1,000 kilograms of cocaine from a container at Tincan Island Port, Lagos. This massive haul worth an estimated ₦338 billion (about $235 million) is being called one of the largest ever recorded in the country.

In response, NDLEA has asked for and secured international support: agents from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the U.K.’s National Crime Agency (NCA) have already joined the investigation, working side by side with Nigerian officials to “unravel the cartel” behind the shipment. Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa, NDLEA’s chairman, said the collaboration aims to leave “no stone unturned” so that the masterminds both local and foreign can be brought to justice.

The seized cocaine was discovered when port operators noticed a suspicious “empty” container and alerted NDLEA, Customs, and other security agencies. Field tests confirmed the dampened fears: the container held pure cocaine. The scale of the seizure reportedly makes it the largest single cocaine infestation ever found at Tincan Port.

This is not the first time NDLEA has made a major bust. Recently, it dismantled a transnational cartel that was using clever concealment: cocaine was hidden inside textile materials and even spiritual charms destined for Australia. In that operation, three kingpins were arrested, revealing how deeply embedded and resourceful these networks are.

The crackdown marks a turning point in Nigeria’s war on drug trafficking. By joining forces with U.S. and U.K. agencies, NDLEA is signaling that the country will no longer tolerate being just a transit hub it is ready to prosecute globally. But more than just arrests and seizures, the true test will lie in whether the root of the cartel is cut off. For Nigeria, and its youth, the stakes could not be higher.
