The Nigerian Super Eagles secured their spot in the African playoffs for the 2026 World Cup on Tuesday night with a decisive 4–0 victory over the Benin Republic.

Victor Osimhen, who stole the show with a spectacular hat-trick in Uyo, is now in second position on Nigeria’s all-time goalscorers’ table with 29 goals in 43 national team appearances. Rashidi Yekini’s historic record of 37 goals in 62 games, which has stood for more than 20 years, is now only eight goals away from the Napoli forward.

Three minutes into the game, Osimhen scored his first goal thanks to a deft ball from Samuel Chukwueze.

He completed his hat-trick early in the second half following a free kick from Moses Simon and doubled the advantage with a strong header in the 37th minute.
To complete the victory, substitute Frank Onyeka scored the fourth goal in stoppage time.

The outcome gave supporters new hope and guaranteed Nigeria’s spot in the playoffs.
Osimhen is very close to the nation’s highest goal total ever thanks to his recent form.
