On Monday, September 1, Ekpa, a proponent of the Indigenous People of Biafra’s (IPOB) actualization, received his sentence.

Ekpa was found guilty by the Päijät-Häme court of encouraging terrorism and taking part in terrorist acts.

Acording to Finnish newspaper Yle, the court said Ekpa had used his “significant social media following” to stoke tensions in Nigeria’s south-east region between August 2021 and November 2024.

Additionally, the district court stated that Ekpa had “through his network of contacts in the region, and he was also found to have encouraged his followers on social media platform X to commit crimes in Nigeria” by providing firearms, explosives, and ammunition to specific groups.

The ruling further stated that Ekpa, a former municipal politician and longtime Lahti resident, committed these offenses from the Finnish city, indicating that the Finnish court had jurisdiction over the matter.

In court, Ekpa had refuted every accusation.
