What began as a ritual procession, one repeated over generations, turned into a moment of spiritual tenderness, ancestral protection, and communal strength, when the young Arugba, the heart of the Osun-Osogbo Festival, could not carry the sacred Igbaaye any farther. Here is the current status update ;

Three ceremonial gunshots rang out, a call to Ogun, god of iron and protection. A spiritual alarm. A plea for the path to be cleared.

That’s when Baba Osun, a revered elder and priest of the goddess, stepped forward. His hands, aged but steady, took the Igbaaye from her, not to replace her, but to hold her place until she could rise again.

Immediately, the Arugba was given omi ero: a traditional herbal mixture made to stabilize and renew strength during intense spiritual undertakings. She was then gently led to the first Ataoja palace, located near the Osun River, where generations of Arugbas have rested before continuing the journey.

It has rained several times this week. To the untrained eye, it may seem like bad weather. But to devotees, rain during Osun Festival is proof: Ọṣun, the goddess of the river, is near.

The rain, the shots, the falter, the substitution, these are not accidents. They are a ritual dialogue between the human and the divine.

She is so young. This year’s Arugba is visibly smaller, more delicate, more visibly human than the myth sometimes allows. Yet she was chosen, because Ọṣun saw her fit. That truth stands, even in pause.

We saw the divine today. Not just in power but in softness.

Baba Osun: The Elder Who Carried Her Burden

When Baba Osun lifted the calabash, he carried more than a gourd. He carried lineage, safety, and sacred continuity. He reminded us that in Yoruba tradition, no one walks alone. Not even the Arugba. Especially not the Arugba.
