The Medical Guild announced the strike, which started at 8:00 a.m., in response to what it called “illegal and disrespectful salary deductions” by the Lagos State Treasury Office.
Dr. Japhet Olugbogi, the chairman of the Medical Guild, stated at a news conference last Saturday that the deductions started in April 2025 when the government arbitrarily cut the wages of its medical staff. A second round of deductions in July violated a long-standing agreement between the Guild and the government, he said, even though the first round was reversed following “spirited intervention and strategic engagement.”
“Our members were obviously upset. Although many demanded an immediate strike, the officers’ committee opted for a more polite course and promoted engagement and advocacy, according to Olugbogi.
The current strike action is set to conclude at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 31. The Guild said that the government’s actions demonstrated bad faith, even though a six-member conciliation committee was established to discuss the matter.
