Bill Kenwright has been involved with Everton since 1989, when he initially joined the board. He eventually became deputy chairman in 1999, after purchasing a controlling stake in the club.

His stint as Everton chairman lasted nearly two decades.

Kenwright has been battling liver cancer since early August, when he was diagnosed. He was recently released from the hospital following emergency surgery to remove a malignant tumor.

Bill Kenwright agreed to continue on Everton’s board earlier this year at the request of the club’s owner, Moshiri, to help during a transitional period. Moshiri, who began investing in Everton in 2016, completed the club’s sale to 777 Partners last month, subject to regulatory approval.
