A tornado struck on Tuesday just north of the port city of Durban after strong winds and rain wrecked roads, flooded homes, and overflowed sewage systems.

The province’s emergency management service issued a statement saying that “unfortunately, four people have been confirmed to have lost their lives so far.”

According to the report, four people—three in Durban and one in larger KwaZulu-Natal—died, a fifth was reported missing, and more than 150 people were homeless.

It was noted that KwaZulu-Natal’s rainy season typically lasts from November to March and that unusually heavy rainfall at this time of year is unusual. The department claimed that “we are personally experiencing the true effects of climate change during the winter season.”
The province saw its worst floods in living memory in April 2022, with Durban and the neighboring areas losing more than 400 people.
Floods and other extreme weather events are becoming stronger and more frequent as the planet gets warmer, according to experts.
