Gunmen killed Hon. Ishaq Onu Yunusa, the chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, in an attack on Thursday, August 27, 2026, along the Itobe–Ochadamu Expressway near Ojuwo Olijo, Ofu Local Government Area.
The Kogi State Command’s spokesperson, ASP Afusat Saliu, confirmed the incident, stating that at approximately 5:00 p.m., gunmen emerged from the bush and opened fire on vehicles. Yunusa was found dead in his abandoned blue Toyota Corolla (registration number GWA 636 CH), while another occupant was reportedly abducted.
In response, the police have initiated a manhunt for the attackers and begun security operations in collaboration with other agencies to search the forests for the abducted victim.
The deceased’s remains were transported to Grimard Hospital in Anyigba for autopsy as investigators pursued leads related to the attack. Kogi State Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, has ordered ongoing security efforts along the high-risk corridor to ensure safety and facilitate the apprehension of those responsible.
