The ruling, delivered by Justice Abiodun Adeyemi, resolved a longstanding leadership and candidacy dispute within the party that had led to rival factions claiming the governorship ticket.

Lawal, who is close to former Kaduna State Governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, contested the ADC primary against Biodun Ogundipe. Following lingering controversy over the election, Lawal sought legal recourse with suit number FHC/AB/CS/97/2026, asking the court to declare him the validly elected candidate. Justice Adeyemi affirmed the validity of Lawal’s primary election, stating it was properly conducted and monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), adhering to all statutory requirements.

The court mandated that INEC recognize Lawal as the party’s official flag bearer. In response, Otunba Femi Soluade, the Ogun State Chairman of the ADC, hailed the decision as a victory for democracy. He emphasized reconciliation within the party, stating, “there will be no victor and no vanquished,” and announced plans to rebuild party structures and strengthen grassroots support in preparation for the election.

Expressing jubilation, Lawal described the judgment as a divine intervention, asserting that his primary victory was clear-cut despite the protracted dispute. He highlighted the necessity of unity within the ADC as they prepare to face a formidable ruling party in the elections.

Conversely, Ogundipe advised his supporters to remain calm and indicated intentions to appeal the ruling. He disputed Soluade’s status as state chairman during the primary, arguing that evidence presented in court affirmed his position. Ogundipe urged his supporters to stay united and assured them of their legal team’s thorough examination of the judgment, signaling confidence that the true will of the party members would ultimately be recognized.
