The Federal Government has launched the Siemens Energy Education and Development (SEED) training centre in Abeokuta as part of efforts under the Presidential Power Initiative to strengthen Nigeria’s electricity sector through human capacity development.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, the Director of Human Resources Management at the Federal Ministry of Power, Samaila Nasiru, described the project as more than just the unveiling of a new facility, noting that it reflects the government’s long-term commitment to transforming Nigeria’s energy sector.
Nasiru explained that the Presidential Power Initiative is focused on upgrading and expanding the nation’s electricity infrastructure.
According to him, although major investments are already being made in transmission and distribution systems through the first phase of the initiative, infrastructure alone cannot solve the sector’s problems without adequate manpower development.
He stressed that sustainable progress in the power sector depends heavily on building a skilled workforce capable of managing and maintaining advanced power systems.
Nasiru added that the SEED programme was designed to ensure local professionals gain the technical knowledge required for long-term success in the industry.
He further revealed that partnerships with organisations such as the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria and the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency would allow participants to earn internationally recognised certifications.
Earlier, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of FGN Power Company, Kenny Anuwe, said the initiative would play a major role in strengthening the country’s electricity sector through structured technical training and human capital development.
Anuwe described the programme as a strategic investment that aligns with the goals of the Presidential Power Initiative to modernise Nigeria’s power infrastructure and ensure sustainable national growth.
He stated that beyond upgrading facilities, the country also needs competent professionals who can efficiently operate, maintain and improve transmission and distribution networks nationwide.
According to him, the programme is aimed at embedding technical expertise within Nigeria’s local workforce while also creating jobs and economic opportunities.
He disclosed that the training would take place across several locations, including Abeokuta, Offa, Ibadan, Ayede, Birnin Kebbi and Sokoto, with plans for more centres in partnership with the Federal Government.
Anuwe also praised development partners such as the European Union, the German Government, Siemens Energy and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit for supporting Nigeria’s energy development efforts.
Also speaking, the Managing Director of Siemens Energy Nigeria, Sheu Suleman, said the programme would support the Federal Government’s reforms in the power sector while helping to reduce technical losses through technology transfer and workforce development.
Meanwhile, the Country Director of GIZ Nigeria, Markus Wagner, stated that the initiative aligns with Nigeria’s broader power sector reform plans and would incorporate industry-approved standards and quality assurance measures into its training programmes.
