The family of late Afrobeats sensation Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has raised concerns about the capability of two laboratories chosen for a court-mandated DNA test to determine the paternity of his son, Liam.

Legal counsel for the family, Oladayo Ogungbe, representing applicant Joseph Aloba, told the court that a Lagos State Magistrate had ordered DNA testing at three labs mutually agreed upon by both parties and the court to ensure fairness and credibility. The facilities included DNA Diagnostics Centre in Ohio, USA, nominated by the applicant; Alpha Biolabs in Warrington, UK, nominated by the respondent; and Advanced Histopathology Laboratory in London, UK, selected by the court.

Checks by the applicant’s team revealed that both Alpha Biolabs and Advanced Histopathology do not perform post-mortem DNA analysis on embalmed tissue, raising doubts about their suitability for the sensitive test. An affidavit was filed with the court, clarifying that the applicant had not intentionally chosen unqualified labs and remains committed to a transparent and scientifically sound process.

The DNA test is part of an ongoing legal effort to confirm the parentage of Liam, Mohbad’s only child, born in April 2023. Mohbad’s death in September 2023 sparked national debate and legal battles over his estate, royalties, and now, his son’s paternity, keeping the case in the public eye.

“This step is vital to ensure the testing is reliable, transparent, and fully compliant with the court’s directive,” Ogungbe said.

The Lagos State Magistrate Court is set to review the affidavit and ensure the DNA testing process aligns with international standards, as the case continues to unfold.
