Nigeria’s youth could hold the key to the nation’s economic future, but only if they are armed with the right skills, according to the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA). The professional body says young Nigerians need solid training in finance and business to thrive in the workforce and contribute effectively to the country’s development.

In a statement on Thursday, CIMA highlighted the range of career opportunities in finance and business, stressing that these fields cultivate leadership, strategic thinking, and globally recognized professional qualifications.

Stephen Flatman, CIMA’s Vice President for Education and Professional Qualifications, Management Accounting, said: “With Nigeria’s young population entering the workforce in unprecedented numbers, equipping them with business and finance skills is essential. It ensures they can become resilient professionals, capable of turning challenges into opportunities and driving meaningful change.”

Flatman pointed to the CGMA Professional Qualification as an ideal route for young Nigerians. The program combines accounting, finance, management, and leadership training, covering strategy, performance and financial management, risk management, corporate reporting, and sustainability. It prepares candidates for careers across sectors, including finance, marketing, IT, operations, and business management.

“The CGMA Professional Qualification gives young people who have completed senior secondary school the skills, confidence, and recognition needed to turn ambition into success,” Flatman said, adding that the program is flexible and accessible at different stages of one’s career.

Founded in 1919, CIMA has a presence in more than 150 countries and territories. The institute’s message is clear: equipping Nigeria’s youth with practical business and finance skills is crucial not only for securing employment but also for fostering innovation and sustainable economic growth.
