Benue State has declared a Lassa fever outbreak after four frontline health workers; three nurses and a community health worker, tested positive, Health Commissioner Paul Ogwuche confirmed Wednesday.

So far, 56 suspected cases have been reported, with eight laboratory-confirmed and three deaths. Ogwuche said the infections exposed gaps in infection control, putting medical personnel at heightened risk.

Residents have been urged to maintain strict hygiene, store food safely, avoid contact with rodents, and seek prompt medical attention for symptoms like fever, vomiting, or unexplained bleeding.
