Tennis icon Serena Williams says using a GLP-1 weight-loss medication helped her regain energy and confidence after motherhood, as she pushes back against the stigma surrounding the drugs.
Speaking on The Oprah Podcast, Williams said the decision was not about conforming to beauty standards but about feeling healthier and stronger in her body. “I love my body. I love who I am,” she said. “I feel like I’m back.”
Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam champion, faced online criticism after publicly sharing her experience with the medication last year. Some accused her of promoting unrealistic expectations for women and athletes. She said she understands the concerns but rejects the idea that taking a GLP-1 is a shortcut or a failure.
“There should be no shame attached to it,” Williams said, pointing to growing research suggesting the medications may offer benefits beyond weight loss, including reduced risks of heart disease and inflammation.
Now a mother of two, Williams said the medication helped improve her energy levels and joint comfort, allowing her to stay active with her children. “If something helps you feel better in your body, why should that be hidden?” she said.
Her message, she added, is simple: “Life is short. You should love who you are.”
