The interruption was caused by maintenance that the Transmission Company of Nigeria was scheduled to perform, according to confirmation from the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors.

Beginning on Monday, the electricity supply would be cut off for nine hours every day, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sunday Oduntan, the CEO of ANED, stated on TVC Monday that the power outage would impact all of Lagos as well as several areas of Ogun, including Sagamu, Ogijo, and Abeokuta.

The TCN had previously announced that it had received authority from the Nigerian Independent System Operator and the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to upgrade a vital piece of infrastructure in one of its 330kV lines, which would provide bulk electricity to Lagos and the surrounding area.

The TCN said, “The upgrade entails the installation of Optical Ground Wire fiber cable on the Omotosho/Ikeja West 330kV transmission line, scheduled from 8 am to 5 pm on July 28, 2025.”

It clarified that in order to guarantee a steady power supply to the Lagos complex throughout the exercise, all other circuits will continue to function even though power would be supplied via the line following each day’s work.
“Once the upgrade is finished, the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system will be fully operationalized, improving real-time power grid monitoring and management,” the statement read.

Oduntan went on to say that during the upgrade, the electrical system would be turned off for safety.

The Omotosho/Ikeja West 330kV transmission line will have optical ground wire fiber cable installed as part of the renovation. “Please be informed that the Transmission Company of Nigeria will perform scheduled maintenance on the Omotosho-Ikeja West 330kV transmission line from Monday, July 28 to Thursday, August 21, 2025, between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM daily,” stated Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company in a notice.

Similar announcements were made by the Eko Disco, which stated that the planned outage was necessary “to enable works to be safely carried out” on the 330kV power line between Omotosho and Ikeja West.

According to EKEDC, load shedding and occasional outages will impact every area covered by its network.

Oduntan promised impacted clients that things would return to normal in the allotted period.
