According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the suspect was using an AR-style rifle, and the cause of the weapon’s acquisition and entry into the school is still being looked into.
According to GBI Director Chris Hosey, nine people—eight children and one teacher—were admitted to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
As a precaution following the incident, all schools in Barrow County were placed on lockdown.

Jud Smith, the sheriff for Barrow County, emphasized the seriousness of the situation, referring to it as “an evil thing.”
At a press conference held outside the school, Smith stated, “This is a very, very fluid investigation.” Smith declared, “What you see behind us is an evil thing.”
Along with expressing their sorrow, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden urged swift action on gun control legislation.
Biden declared, “We cannot keep accepting this as normal.”
Biden remarked, “What in Winder, Georgia, should have been a happy return to school season has now become yet another horrifying reminder of how gun violence continues to tear our communities apart.” Instead of learning how to read and write, students all around the nation are being taught how to duck and cover. This cannot be tolerated as the new normal.

A database maintained by Northeastern University, the Associated Press, and USA Today indicates that Wednesday’s massacre is the 604th mass murder in American history that results in the deaths of four or more persons since 2006. Over the course of 18 years, the database has kept track of 3,120 mass murder deaths in the US.
Gray is the youngest suspected school shooter responsible for a mass murder since at least 2006, according to a statistical analysis done by USA Today.
According to a recent study, the 2023–24 school year saw a sharp increase in shootings, with at least 144 occurrences of gun violence. This fall, the Georgia massacre is the first mass killing at a school. According to David Riedman, the creator of the K-12 School Shooting Database, and Everytown for Gun Safety, gun violence at schools resulted in 36 fatalities and 87 injuries during the preceding academic year.
FBI forecasted 2023
According to FBI Atlanta, Gray—the alleged shooter in Georgia—was questioned by local law enforcement in 2023, as the agency revealed on X on Wednesday.
Anonymous tips regarding online threats pertaining to a school shooting were received by the FBI’s National Threat Operations Center in May 2023. The threats were vague as to the location or timing, but they did contain pictures of guns.
After receiving this information from the FBI, Gray and his father were interviewed by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office.
The father—who isn’t identified in the post—told the sheriff’s office that his son didn’t have “unsupervised access” to the hunting firearms at home when he first told them, according to FBI Atlanta.
FBI Atlanta reports that Gray, who was 13 years old at the time, denied posting the threats online and that Jackson County had notified the nearby schools to conduct “continued monitoring” of him.
According to FBI Atlanta, there was not at the time a reasonable suspicion to make an arrest or take any other legal action.
Rather than being a part of Jackson County schools, Apalachee High School is located in Barrow County. It’s uncertain if Gray attended any Jackson County schools prior to relocating to the Barrow County School District.
Schools were closed.
As a precaution, all of the schools in Barrow County were put on lockdown on Wednesday morning. Later on in the week, Superintendent Dallas LeDuff declared that schools would be closed and that children would have access to crisis counseling.
Situated in Winder, a rural community close to Atlanta, Georgia, Apalachee High School is one of the district’s two high schools, with around 1,900 students.
Trump reacts.
Former President Donald Trump wrote in a Truth Social post late Wednesday afternoon that “our hearts are with the victims and loved ones” of the massacre.
“These cherished children were taken from us far too soon by a sick and deranged monster,” Trump said in a letter.
“We are currently gathering details on what transpired. But we know there were many fatalities and injuries,” Harris said. “Our hearts are with all of the children, teachers, and families, of course. We also want to thank the first responders and law enforcement officers who were on location. But this is just another pointless tragedy among many.”
