Since the conclusion of the previous season, United has spent approximately £85 million (about $114 million) on players like Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans, and Karl Darlow. However, this expenditure is significantly lower compared to rivals such as Manchester City, Arsenal, and Chelsea, who have made high-profile signings at hefty prices.

Carrick emphasized the need for more quality and depth as Manchester United aims to secure its first English title since 2013 while also competing in the Champions League. Historically, the club has never spent over £89.5 million (around $120.7 million) on a single player, a record set with Paul Pogba’s transfer in 2016. As Carrick prepares for his inaugural season as permanent manager, following a successful interim period, he has reiterated the importance of attracting more talent to the squad.

He conveyed confidence in the business conducted so far, pointing out the acquisition of “top, top players,” yet he remains adamant that the desire for improvement is continuous. Carrick noted that while financial considerations are valid, the essence of competition is rooted in football performance. Some supporters are growing concerned about the club’s relatively low spending, especially with the Premier League opener against Hull approaching on August 22.

When questioned about the spending levels compared to other teams, Carrick stated he does not have all the answers, but emphasized the need to maximize current resources. On a related note, Marcus Rashford has returned to United after a season-long loan at Barcelona, with questions lingering about his future at the club, especially since Barcelona opted not to purchase him. Carrick acknowledged Rashford’s potential to contribute significantly to the squad.

Several players have expressed a belief in the team’s ability to challenge Arsenal for the title. Carrick remains optimistic about the team’s potential, stating, “We’ve definitely got the potential to achieve something really special,” highlighting the commitment to aim for success commensurate with the club’s stature.
